Questions Donors Should Ask Before Giving

Lupe Ramos Silva · 5 min read

Begin with yourself

Purposeful giving starts with reflection. What causes move you most deeply? What change would you like to see in your community or in the world? Clarifying your own values and priorities makes every later decision easier and more consistent.

Consider, too, how involved you want to be. Some donors prefer to give quietly; others want to build close relationships with the organizations they support.

Ask about the organization

Once you have a sense of direction, ask questions of the organizations you are considering. What is their theory of change? Who leads the work, and how is the board engaged? How do they measure progress, and what have they learned from setbacks?

The answers, and the openness with which they are shared, reveal a great deal about an organization's culture and credibility.

The right questions turn a donation into a partnership.

Ask about the gift itself

Think about the form your support should take. Unrestricted funds give organizations flexibility, while restricted gifts can support a specific program. Multi-year commitments can provide stability that allows a nonprofit to plan with confidence.

There is no single right answer; the best structure is the one that fits both your goals and the organization's needs.

Plan for the relationship

Finally, consider what you would like to learn over time. Agreeing on simple, reasonable reporting helps both donor and organization stay aligned without creating an unnecessary burden.

A thoughtful framework does not need to be complicated. A few honest questions, asked at the right moment, can make your giving more purposeful for years to come.
